Third Grade:
- Exploring Capacity Activity
- Using different bottle containers (ex: shampoo bottle, Gatorade bottle, water bottle, etc.) mark off different points on the bottles (quarter, half, three quarters, full, ½, ¼, etc.) Fill a large container/tub with colored water (easier for viewing) and ask children to play around with the water and measurements on the bottles. Ask them to fill each bottle to the half way mark/full mark/quarter mark, etc. Encourage use of the measurement terms, ¼ = quarter, ½ = halfway, etc. For a reference of this activity, visit https://theimaginationtree.com/exploring-capacity-with-coloured-water/.
- Predicting & Measuring Mass
- Give children counters (teddy bear counters, etc.) to be used as unit material for measuring different objects. Provide different objects (3) to be measured (ex: ball, toys, doll, etc.) and a scale for measuring those objects. Also, provide a worksheet or paper for children to record the objects being used, their predictions for the mass of each object, and what each object's mass actually is. Children will then predict what each of their object's mass is, and then actually measure each and record what they are.
